Newport, Dave. “Campus Sustainability: It’s About People.” http://chronicle.com. N.p., April 4, 2012. Web. 4 Oct 2012. <http://chronicle.com/article/Campus-Sustainability-Its/131370/>.

The author of this work is Dave Newport, who is the director of the Environmental Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is also the secretary of board of directors of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. The author’s thesis says that sustainability should focus on people and their needs, because if it does not, environmentalism and sustainability would be significantly less probable.

The author does have a pro-sustainability bias, but he strongly emphasizes that sustainability should be primarily about the needs of the people, otherwise the sustainability movement would go nowhere. The strengths of this article is that for it being non-peer reviewed, it is a generally strong article, and it uses sources such as Agyeman in order to support his claim that sustainability is for the people. He also mentions how the majority of voices in the sustainability movement, 92 percent in fact, are white, which in itself is problematic. He mentions the three pillars of sustainability(economic, social, environmental), but does not mention them enough, which is also a weakness of the article. Another weakness is that it is a article with a conflict, but no plan. This material, though, is relevant, and would also make a good part for an introduction.
