Knox, Leila Wombacher. “Campuses Get a ‘sustainable’ Look.” The Christian Science Monitor. The Christian Science Monitor, 21 May 2002. Web. 14 Oct. 2012. <http://www.csmonitor.com/2002/0521/p16s03-lehl.html>.

This is an article written by Leila Wombacher Knox, a writer for the Christian Science Monitor, a website dedicated to global issues. Written in 2002, this article was written in order to introduce a new idea, which is the idea of sustainable campuses, which was not a very important issue in the early 2000’s. The fact that this article was written at this time, and explains the ideas of Stanford, who was one of the first schools to make a true push for sustainability, is very significant. This is because this was one of the first instances of a school trying to go green, and therefore this actually chronicles a time when attitudes were just beginning to change on an issue that has ten years later become very significant to almost all schools in the country today. This is not only helpful to a student who may be looking for examples of schools going green, but Knox also educates readers on the ideas that started the sustainability movements. This article does not have the benefit of hindsight that an article would have if it was written today about Stanford, but it does contain the element of foreshadowing the widespread idea of increasing sustainability on college campuses.
