The Aquatic Research and Environmental Assessment Center at Brooklyn College, or AREAC is dedicated to understating marine organisms and the development of aquaculture. For example, tilapia is actually grown at Brooklyn College and the whole process is explained here: http://brooklyn-areac.blogspot.com/2010/02/martin-becomes-youtube-sensation.html. This is ecologically friendly because the fish do not have to be depopulated in their native habitats and they can be consumed locally, thus minimizing the carbon footprint caused by transportation.

It is hard to understand exactly where the center works at the college just from the internet but it does goes us some awesome contacts to potentially interview as well as a great idea for a podcast stop (when of course we find out where this all happens. The pertinence to food sustainability is obvious as well as the fact that Brooklyn College is engaged in research. It would be great if we could actually make something like a podcast tour of the facilities.

The relative lack of information on the websites (as well as the fact that they are not updated too frequently) is also telling. Much information comes from 2008-2010 when the whole idea of carbon emissions reduction in CUNY was being discusses and worked out.

AREAC is very interesting. I believe it is going through a transition right now. It is located in Ingersoll. Martin Schreibman is the professor who ran the tilapia program, but I believe this may be phased out. John Marra is currently the director. Brett Branco (who led our Gowanus tour) is the Associate Director. Any one of these people could help answer your questions. There have also been academic articles written by Schreibman which might be useful.
