Stewart, Mark. “Transforming Higher Education: A Practical Plan for Integrating Sustainability Education into the Student Experience.” Journal of Sustainability Education. 1. (2010): n. page. Print.

The author of the article is the Campus Sustainability Coordinator at the University of Maryland. His work focuses on creating a carbon neutral and resource efficient campus while enhancing opportunities for all students to learn how they can help create a more sustainable society. He holds an M.A. in Higher Education Policy and Leadership, B.S. in Environmental Science, B.A. in Organizational Psychology and is a LEED accredited professional. This article explains how some universities, such as Arizona State University, the University of Georgia, and the University of Maryland, who made significant efforts, by developing new academic programs, creating graduation requirements, and training faculty on how to integrate sustainability across the curriculum in order to educate students about sustainability. The author’s intended audience is the university faculty instructors who he expects to instruct students on sustainability.

This article has a pro-sustainability bias. The strength of this article is that it focuses on the social relations of students in the university. It emphasizes the social pillar of sustainability. The weakness of this article is that it does not focus on economic sustainability. This material is relevant in terms of my project since it could serve as a model for the integration of sustainability into the student experience at college.
