Brownfield Sites – Between Abandonment and Redevelopment Case Study: Craiova City

October 19th, 2012 · 1 Comment · Gowanus Canal

Georgiana Popescu was a doctoral student at the University of Bucharest. He tries to explain to the reader how a brownfield should be developed and how it can be reused in a sustainable matter. The main premise of his paper is that cities should reuse brownfields and use less greenfields because it’s important to reuse everything. Therefore, jobs can be created and less land for trees and other sources will be needed when companies are looking to expand. His intended audience is primarily city/town planners as most of his paper is focused on plans to help the environment and economy.

As such, there is obvious bias in his paper for how the author wants to develop the area. In terms of strength, the paper contained a graph and a map in order to show their data. In terms of weaknesses however, the area in which they conducted the study is not in America. However, I can use this paper to prove that more care is given to the economical and environmental pillar of sustainability. As for relevance, I don’t think that this is the best thing that relates to the Gowanus primarily because the area that Popescu is trying to explain is a more rural area and there is even a proposal to label all of the brownfields. However, because this is a more rural area that is located in another country, it is good to see now other countries are dealing with brownfields.
