This article by Howard Halle, editor at large for Time Out New York, wrote this piece in 2000 about canoeing in the Gowanus Canal. The author’s thesis is that the cleanliness of the canal is improving, though no complete end is in sight for the pollution therein. He writes for the average New Yorker, leaning in favor of the canal canoeing (though maintaining a degree of skepticism). The article is strong in presenting the strange idea of Gowanus canoeing in a humorous manor. It addresses environmental sustainability by discussing the increased sightings of wildlife and the reduction of pollution. The article is relevant as it will provide us more background information on the boating activities in the canal.
