MoMA PS1

MoMA PS1, originally called the Institute for Art and Urban Resources Inc., is one of Long Island City’s most notable art centers. It houses contemporary art in open exhibition areas. It was first established in 1971, showcasing an exhibit called Rooms which set the example for the exhibition-typed layout for the institution. It was renovated in 1997 and reopened as P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center. In 2000, P.S.1 partnered with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The partnership provided a strong capabilities in art acquisition and well-respected reputation for P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and provided a contemporary subsidiary to complement the modern art collection for MoMA. The partnership lead to the institution’s current name, MoMA PS1. The merger between these two institutions was completed in 2010.

Approximately 50 exhibitions are displayed in the center over the course of a year. The institution also acts as a studio and performance venue for some events, as well as a radio broadcast station and an architectural competition sponsor [18]. One of the exhibits current on view is September 11, is a compilation of [17]. Today, it is one of the most well-known contemporary art institutions in New York City. Contemporary artists are always sought after by MoMA PS1 to continue increasing the exposure of contemporary art to the public. [15]
