Socrates Sculpture Park
Socrates Sculpture Park is situated along the East River and overlooking Roosevelt Island and the Manhattan skyline. The area maintained by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and has been transformed significantly from the riverside landfill and dumping ground it used to be. [1] In 1986, Mark di Suvero, a sculptor, created an open area for residents to enjoy as a park and for artists to display their work. It is the only park of its kind in New York City that houses large sculptures outdoors. It encourages an artist-viewer relationship by allowing a close interaction with the artwork.[2]
The park is very open and spacious. There is ample room between the sculptures to isolate each one and allow viewers to study each one on its own. The mediums of the sculptures vary, ranging from steel to foam to concrete. Entrance to the park is free, as is entrance to a wide variety of seasonal and festive events.
Below are some of the sculptures that were on display in October.
After admiring the sculptures, one can admire an unobstructed view of the East River and the Manhattan skyline from the park. The Roosevelt Island Bridge is also in view from the park.
