Dr. Samantha MacBride
samantha.macbride (at) baruch.cuny.edu
Samantha MacBride is Assistant Professor of Public Affairs at Baruch College of the City University of New York. Samantha’s work focuses broadly on the study of materials in society, including discarded urban materials that have historically been called garbage, scrap, and waste; as well as coal, petrochemicals, and textiles. Before starting at Baruch in the Fall of 2012, Samantha worked for 15 years in the recycling field, developing policy and programs for material reuse, composting, and marketing secondary materials at the New York City Department of Sanitation. This experience, in conjunction with her study of critical social science and industrial ecology, led to her book, published in late 2011, entitled Recycling Reconsidered: the Present Failure and Future Promise of Environmental Action. Samantha holds a PhD in Sociology and a Masters in Public Administration from New York University, as well as a Bachelors in Biology from Johns Hopkins University. She is currently researching policy, economy, and activism related to technologies that convert organic and synthetic wastes into fuels and chemicals. Samantha is an avid composter and gardener, and loves animals.
Professor’s office hours are 3 — 4:30 PM Tuesdays or by appointment.
Note that office hours are canceled on May 5th.

Brian Ford is a doctoral candidate in the Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology program at the CUNY Graduate Center. Based at Queens College in the Dennehy Lab, his research explores both how relatedness affects gene flow between viruses and how prior host identity affects subsequent viral fitness. Prior to joining the Dennehy Lab, he worked for four years on microbicide development at the Population Council and two years at the BAC Transgenic Core of the GENSAT Project of the Rockefeller University. Brian received a BA in Organismal Biology and Ecology from Bard College and an MS in Biology from NYU. He has taught labs in Introductory Biology and Microbiology for both majors and non-majors at Brooklyn College and Queens College.
