The universal Muslim greeting (above written in Arabic) “As’salamualaikum” translates to “Peace Be Unto You.”

The presence of Muslims in the United States can be seen as early as the 1600s. The establishment of Muslim communities is fairly recent, however, since the majority of Muslim immigration occurred following 1965. Bensonhurst, a previously Italian-dominated community, is home to a growing Muslim population and boasts several mosques and Muslim-owned businesses. This website documents the gradual formation of Bensonhurst’s Muslim community. Check out our other posts to find out more!
