Although many Muslims continued to educate others and stand up for their faith, the increasing number of extremist terror attacks around the world continued to fan Islamophobia. On November 13, 2015, Paris was attacked, leaving 130 people dead. As a response to the attacks, the MAS Youth Center on Bath Avenue held a multi-faith gathering to condemn these attacks. In the meeting, Ali Kamel of the Bronx Muslim Center held up a Quran and said, “If anyone is thinking they can kill anyone using this book, 100%, he is not Muslim.” During the meeting, faith leaders urged people to feel sympathy for Syrian refugees and Jewish clergy members made a parallel between the Syrian refugees and Jews who needed a place to escape from Nazi Germany. “As a Jew, I am particularly historically aware of the need for sanctuary and safe haven for refugees, and the most important thing we can do to honor those who perished, is to welcome refugees who are living and fleeing similar violence,” Rabbi Michael Feinberg commented.
