A woman in a white flowy dress gazes into an oval mirror, looking at her own reflection.

Un Regard Fugitif

Mary Shepard Greene Blumenschein

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

In this artwork we see a woman, she is looking at herself in the mirror intently. We are not sure what story is depicted but we do understand a similar feeling that is being depicted in the painting. Her face does not depict much of a certain emotion but focuses more on herself. We understood this painting as a woman observing herself for any flaws.

The sea, there is no story depicted it’s just vast. The artist background does explain why it was created and his experience as someone who served and camouflaged ships in WW1.

Woman on a forest stage

Keith’s Union Square

Everett Shinn

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

There is a woman in a dress walking in, what we first thought, a forest. But upon looking at the description on the side, we realized that she is a performer on a stage. This shows how one can easily get lost in the Theater and their passion for the arts, just like getting lost in a forest.

Depiction of a sunset over a field with thin paint splatters all across.

La Habana Sunset

José Parlá

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

This work of art depicts a sunset, one which I assume the artist experienced in Havana, Cuba due to the title. It is very vibrant and seems like an explosion of light. After Parlá’s three-month-long coma, he decided to paint his dreams and this artwork seems very otherworldly. It is both gentle and chaotic all at once.

The sculpture is a women that’s chained and in contropasto. She’s sort of leaning back on this fabric with this off balance in her position. She’s looking off to the side and sort of mysterious. The texture of the sculpture is smooth along her skin but you could see the detail and imagine the roughness along the fabric she holds.

The Greek Slave

Hiram S. Powers

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

This is a statue of a Greek female slave. Her peaceful goddess like presence juxtaposes this fact and it increases our sympathy towards her. This statue was made around the time of the civil war so it had a greater message for Americans and the British about other women who were enslaved like mulatto and African American Women.

The wide framed painting depicts glaciers towards the left and trees link both sides of the paintings. In the middle there’s skeletons and animals in the crevices of the stumps. On the right a waterfall with blooming flowers and schools of fish are depicted. Coral is also depicted. The stumps are swirling at the center of the painting, and a breastfeeding nude mother is depicted at the core. Roots come up from the bottom-center of this painting, and humans are depicted inside the roots. On the top left there’s a line of women doing agricultural work at night with jugs on their head. On the top right there are male farmers growing crops.

Web of Life

John Biggers

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The passing of seasons and time through the contrast of glaciers on the left (winter) and the blooming trees and melted waterfall on the right (spring). Meanwhile, there is a contrast of death within the roots on the left and the symbols of life in the mother and the people within the wombs of the trees. Overall, it is a depiction of the diversity of life and themes of fertility throughout the painting.

A wreath composed of thin leaves and flowers carefully shaped out of gold.

Wreath

Not stated

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

The gold looks to be very fragile, so it looks very exclusive. There’s even a thermometer on the side to keep the box at a stable temperature so it doesn’t melt or freeze. The story behind this work of art is that this was often given to athletic winners in the Greek world. You would often find guests wearing these on top of their heads in lavish dinner parties. It represented honor and dignity among those in Ancient Greece who has won themselves one of these.

A gilded cartonnage intended to be slipped over a mummy’s head; a woman wearing a shawl, along with a headdress, a curly updo, hoop earrings and several necklaces (some of which are detailed with green or blue paint; one of the necklaces has flower beads), as well as serpent armlets and a serpent ring. Her eyes and eyebrows are lined in blue. She holds flowers in one of her hands, which are painted over in mauve, whereas the other holds wheat. The cartonnage contains only the bust of the woman.

Mummy Cartonage of a Woman

N/A (ancient art)

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

Considering that this is supposed to be used for a mummy, I believe this is symbolic and must be in some way representative of life, like well wishes to honor someone in death.
Unlike other statues, whose gaze is focused at you, the figure gazes ahead, which along with the flowers she is holding in her hands seems to suggest that she is either parting with someone or awaiting someone. Either of these analogies could be applied to death. Given the Egyptians’ value of the afterlife, this could represent greeting the afterlife and the departure of life.

It’s a panorama art piece of the life cycle. At the root/center is a woodsy feminine figure holding or protecting an infant. Surrounding it on the left and right are serene scenes of nature in winter and summer respectively. At the top are black men as the sun rises and women working in the fields as the moon shines down on them.

Web of Life

John Biggers

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

Our group came up with the idea that this piece of art work consisted of multiple ideas like the life cycle, reproduction, mother nature, African American heritage, gender roles, and preservation. The story we believe is being depicted is how human and nature are intertwined. Also how mother nature is the source of life and death. We also realized the woman and men doing certain jobs and how both are needed to uphold society.

This is a large painting depicting the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains using multiple grounds and mostly dark colors to resembles the forestry and rocky terrain of the mountains. The foreground includes greenery, a lake and teepees along with Native Americans running down a slope. The background is mostly dark and grey which is in contrast to the blue and white sky looming ahead.

A Storm in the Rocky Mountains

Albert Bierstadt

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

Settler Europeans migrated to the west( western expansion) due to artists like Albert who depicted the rich environment in a way that Europeans wanted to capitalized on it. This giant painting includes the mysteries and allure of the Rocky Mountains, but shrinks the size of the Native people as a way to diminish the fact that there were people living there before them. This colonialist view allowed for the displacement and erasure of Native Americans in their homes in order to accommodate for the newly arrived settlers.

The Greek Slave

Hiram S. Powers

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

This sculpture depicts a bare woman with her hands chained. This sculpture was intended to depicts the story of a Greek woman enslaved during the war of independence, but was later also interpreted to represent the enslavement of Black women in America. Her bare body and chains represent how she has been made powerless and is being violated. Her expression depicts her anguish and sorrow.

There is a variety of color splashing across the page. The colors are used to create forms of people, one man appearing to arm wrestle the woman. Around, there is evidence of various symbols of unique identity depicted by the range of colors. The clothing also presents different shades and has a combination of different shapes.

Modern Reconstruction of a New Kingdom Model of a Temple Gateway

Charles Edwin Wilbour Fund

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

It shows the discrepancy between the noble and common men of Egypt. Specifically, the high walls and doors closing off the temple expand on these discrepancies between the two groups of people, even at a place of worship. As you walk around the piece, you can change from the perspective of the noble man to the common man, which is both melancholy and isolating. The story being told is the perspectives of the noble men versus the common men. The hieroglyphics show men holding the offerings to the Gods and in front of the temple that shields the noble men. In a way, this emphasizes the social hierarchy, since the people inside the temple are kings and noblemen who were comparable to the Gods, while the common men are offering their blessings to both the nobility and the Gods.

This painting is an ancient Egyptian painting of the noblewoman Tjepu. She has long black hair with traditional ancient Egyptian attire and jewelry. It appears that the clothing is of veiled material as her arm can be seen through it. She is holding what seems to be a vase in her left hand. It’s a beautiful display of grace and culture.

Lady Tiepu

Unknown

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

This piece of art seems to be a beautiful representation of ancient Egyptian culture, the beauty and culture. From the title, one can deduce that she was of high status or was well known by people in ancient Egypt. Although there is not much history about her life, we wonder what she may have done throughout her life.
