What the world needs…

McKibben’s piece “What the World Needs is Art, Sweet Art” embodies the message that he is trying to convey. That the written word should be artistically used to create awareness of the issue of climate change. I really enjoyed his sarcastic remarks in regards to the cheesy films that mythified climate change. The part about the heat wave in Western Europe in 2003 really struck me. I was, what? Ten? When that happened. I didn’t even know it happened. That isn’t the type of thing ten year olds pay attention to, and that’s…I don’t even know what that says about us. Sure, it’s great to be blind to the blights of the world, but what if it’s something that directly affects us? I mean I read it and it was the first time I was hearing about the heat wave. Tells you a lot about our level of awareness, huh?
