The world needs to stop procrastinating…..

I agree with Bill McKibben when he says that the world leaders that are participating in this year’s summit on climate change are not specialized on the meticulous details regarding the causes and consequences of climate change. Being that, my initial reaction was that there was not going to be much change or prevention regarding the issue of climate change.

Also, I feel as though the issue of climate change is not taken very seriously as compared to the other major global problems, such as that of Israel and Palestine. Even Obama himself states that we, as a nation, are “fortunate” that we are not facing the same “crisis of the scale and scope that Lincoln or FDR faced,” thus portraying climate change in a trivial light. I think this is what’s causing many to procrastinate on taking action on such as crucial issue that can destroy our future generation. Since the changes that results from climate change are occurring now indistinctly (like the 2012 failed corn harvest and drought in California), many people fail to see the larger implications of climate change until it’s too late.

When I read the banner “CLIMATE/JOBS. TWO CRISES. ONE SOLUTION”, I immediately understood why climate change is a hard factor to solve and prevent. For example, stopping the use of fossil fuels and digging of coal mines would eventually leave thousands of people unemployed and in poverty. In the same way, letting them keep their jobs would do the complete opposite and would eventually leave our planet in a harmful state. Likewise, since cars release so much pollution into our atmosphere, drivers knowingly still are not ready to give up their car. Why? It’s not because they don’t care about our environment, rather in a society, such as ours, it is hard to accept such a change when we rely on vehicles to transport us to our destination.

I think the real problem is that it is hard for people to accept change and alter their way of living because they are so used to it. However, if we don’t change now, then when will we? Are we really going to sit down and watch the tidal waves rise onto our abodes till its too late?
