“There are no passengers on the Spaceship Earth. We are all crew.”
After watching the video “One planet, One chance” and pondering upon the message conveyed by it, I chose a quotation by Marshall McLuhan as my response to the video.
“There are no passengers on the Spaceship Earth. We are all crew.”
“One planet, One chance” made me conscious of my ignorance to the subject of Climate change which can have adverse effects on our planet in the future. I realised that some of our small actions in our daily life like letting the water run while brushing teeth, flushing the toilet multiple times and using plastic bags at the grocery store exacerbates the climate change. Such ruthless behaviour by us is the evidence of the fact that we are functioning as passengers on Earth as we are wasting the precious resources by burning the limited fossil fuels at a unreasonable rate and heating up the Earth. If we were to act as the crew members of our planet as mentioned by Marshall McLuhan, we would take the issue of climate change seriously, create awareness about it and take part actively in slowing down this destructive process.
Another fact that this video pointed out towards is that the poor countries will bear the burden of adapting to the climate change a lot more than the developed countries although their carbon footprint is much less as compared to those living in developed countries. One of the photos in the video that said turning on an air conditioner somewhere in New York will have indirect consequences on people living in Bangladesh discerns me that developed countries are primarily culpable for climate change and therefore, they should now act as crew members to Mother Earth by making dramatic changes quickly to reverse the damage they have caused to the Earth.
