A Beginning, A Middle, But What About Our Ending?
There is a small house that holds the memories of a man. He remembers playing in the garden with his sister during the summertime, and celebrating birthdays with his stuffed dolphin. As the narrator says, “Life is good.” But time must go on and things eventually change. Years later, he comes back to a different home. The new owners covered the old stone with plaster. In the past, there weren’t any bay windows and the garden was bigger. According to the narrator, the house has lost some of its charm and “It’s not as nice.”
His own house reminded me that the home of all of humanity, the earth, is transforming into something unrecognizable. The world is slowly changing as the owners develop new technology; new manmade creations are destroying the natural world around us. Trees are being cut down for paper and cars are producing excessive amounts of carbon dioxide. And maybe soon, like the protagonist and his house, the world may become different, thus losing its distinct qualities such as the ice caps in Antarctica. Who knows where the future lies? Hopefully in the end, we won’t say, “Its not as nice.”
