One Planet, Many Tries
When we watched this video in class, I had goosebumps on my arms due to the sheer fact of the amount of destruction we’ve caused. The devastating pictures along with the haunting music made a lasting impact on my mind. Among all the pictures, this picture at 1:23 stood out to me the most because I didn’t notice it the first time I was watching the video. The second time watching the video, this picture zoomed by and made be stop it and go back to look at it. This picture resembles piggy banks we are all familiar with from our childhood. However, the major difference is that instead of the generic animal shaped bank, it is shaped like the world. Normally, the generic bank is slowly filled with coins. When the money is wanted, the owner usually breaks the bank in to pieces, claiming the prize, leaving the bank unfix-able.
The “world bank” in the picture resembles a storage where people, the “owners” of the world, are dumping trash, waste, and other harmful things into the world. People are exploiting the “world bank”, taking all its resources, leaving it battered and infertile. In the end, when the Earth is full of trash and is barren, it will crack in our own hands. The parallelism between the ideas of the generic piggy bank and the world as our storage for all things negative is extremely powerful and effective to display the message that the Earth is changing- for the worse.
We only have one world to live on and protect. Whether it takes one try or many tries, we need to come together without borders in mind and save this planet which we will never find another duplicate of.
