One Planet, One Chance

“If we looked down at the world from space, we would not see any demarcations of national boundaries. We would simply see one small planet, just one.

-Dalai Lama

I chose this quote because it moved me in a way that the other quotes and artwork did not. I felt that was powerful and meaningful.

To me, what Dalai Lama is saying is that despite our differences and how we divide ourselves among society, we are still part of the same entity. We are all human. We live in the same world. Therefore, we cannot just say “it’s none of my business” or “I couldn’t care less”. What affects one will, in one form or another, affect all.

After all the heartbreaking and depressing images in the video (along with the disturbing music playing in the background), one cannot help but agree with Lama. Let me just say that I love quotes like these because even though it is a very deep statement on its own, it perfectly complements the issue of climate change very well. What he is saying however, is that since we live in the same place, we might as well respect ourselves and the environment we create. It is, after all, the only planet we know of that sustains life so far. We are not protected or separated from the potentially catastrophic consequences of global warming because of our cultures or ethnicities. It doesn’t matter who you are, you should do everything in your power to save the future generations and preserve nature. This quote seems to bring everyone together and forget all our distinctions from each other. It reminds me of family and home.
