This is Serious

“A Call to Arms” by McKibben starts off by inviting people to New York City to “prove to themselves, and to their children, that they give a damn about the biggest crisis our civilization has ever faced.” This is serious; climate change is a huge crisis and all us human beings need to change our habits before our planet is destroyed (more so than it already is). President Obama has stated that we are pretty lucky since we are not facing a crisis like people did under President Lincoln or FDR. Most people, like myself, and President Obama do not see how serious climate change is, but after these last couple of days I have learned so much about climate change and just how big of an issue it truly is. During Obama’s presidency, the Arctic ice has mostly melted and the ice in the South Pole is also melting causing the sea levels to rise, seawater is getting more acidic which is affecting the aquatic organisms that live there, there are droughts that are happening, and who can forget Hurricane Sandy? That was the first time I realized and many other people probably realized too that Mother Nature can turn against us and really destroy us if she wanted to.

In a perfect world, we wouldn’t have to march, but we do have to march now before it is too late. All of us need to stand together and show the rest of the world how big of an issue this really is. “We understand that it won’t be easy to shift our economy off coal and gas and oil, but we know that it will be easier than coping with temperatures that no human has ever seen”, McKibben states. We know it won’t be easy to change our ways of living because we are so used to them, but it will be much harder to deal with the extreme consequences that our living causes on the environment. It is hard to imagine now what climate change or global warming will do to Earth, but before we know it, our home will change for the worse. The Earth will face drastic, dangerous changes, so what can we do? We can march! We must march and show the world leaders and other people just how serious climate change is because by the time most of us realize how crucial this issue is it will be too late.
