From Past to Present … to Future
When I began reading, Climate Changed I was immediately drawn to the setting of the graphic memoir. The speaker visits his childhood home and recognizes how much it has changed. With the addition of a pool as opposed to the lake he had in his childhood and the smaller garden, everything has clearly been modernized. I think this imagery of the pool and small garden symbolizes the deterioration of nature. Emphasizing this, I found it ironic how the speaker is driving around in a car and adding to the pollution. But at the same time, he develops a strong passion and urge to actually look into environmentalism.
I was also drawn to how the speaker talks about how he will always recalled the beginning scene of Peter Pan from his childhood. It was a moment in his life that he will never forget. In the same way, I infer that the same could be applied when we raise awareness about climate change in each individual. I think the speaker wants to instill that same spark he had when watching the opening scenes of Peter Pan when he informs the individual about climate change so that they will always recall that moment as well.
