The Amazing Beginning of “Climate Changed”
The fact that I have never read a graphic novel about the subject of Climate change before made me more interested in the graphic memoir “Climate Changed” by Philippe Squarzoni. When I first took a look at this book, the features that stood out the most to me were the amazing black and white line drawings which make it look like a comic and increase ones curiosity about the content of this book. The title of this book also includes a phrase “A personal Journey through the Science” which is intriguing as well because along with the explanation of global warming, the readers also get to discover how the author himself becomes interested in the subject of Climate Change, which is one of the most salient issue at the moment but most of the people still fail to take it into consideration. This novel has the ability to make its readers curious from the beginning as it has a personal touch to it. In the beginning, the author writes about his beautiful childhood spent in a two-story stone house located in a small village in France but he soon realizes that he could barely remember any details about the house. After talking about his childhood memories, he talks to his wife about adding a chapter in his new book about the government’s environmental policies but soon after researching about it, he realizes that he does not have any information about the subject of climate change at all. When he writes “I don’t really know a whole lot about environmental issues”, this really strikes me because I can exactly relate to it as I am also one of those people who are not knowledgeable about the damage caused to the Earth by our actions. This phrase really makes me feel like I have been ignorant this whole time about a very significant issue which needs much more attention. I really appreciate the way Squarzoni shifts the focus from the story of his lack of knowledge about the climate change to the bogus environmental policies created by government which clearly shows that the bureaucrats are not concerned about our planet at all. Squarzoni’s way of mentioning government’s inaction aggravates me and makes me passionate at the same time to take action, create awareness and put an end to the destruction caused to our Mother Earth so that our future generations could also benefit from its resources and appreciate our planet.
