This Place is a Part of Me
There were several aspects of the reading assigned that stood out to me. One such aspect was how Squarzoni introduces his book. He basically begins his journey by describing a lot of other introductions and beginnings. This was an interesting approach because it seemed more like he’s a real person starting something he doesn’t quite know how to start, rather than that distant, unapproachable, professional author.
Another thing that stood out to me was that he spends the majority of his introduction was spent describing his childhood. I think this was a very sweet way to start the book. It was also symbolic in the sense that like his childhood, the well-being of the planet Earth seems like an innocent bliss lost, blended into an indistinguishable, general time of peace. However, as time goes on, this time of harmony becomes a mere memory that can only be revisited in regretful nostalgia.
Another aspect that I found interesting is how the author expressed his ignorance of climate change. This made the story very relatable, even from the very beginning, because like the common citizen, he was not aware of the specific policies, actions, or even facts about the problems afflicting the environment. I thought this was a wise way to introduce the story because as the author learns about climate change, so will the reader. So, it is as though everyone is beginning at the same level of knowledge concerning global warming. This chapter as a whole was very interesting and I look forward to continuing reading this novel.
