The Climate: A Dangerous Game
The one image that stuck with me when I finished reading this section is the title of the book that Squarzoni mention on page 44. It was called The Climate: A Dangerous Game. If I continue using a game as the metaphor, then I see three major players – Humans, Natural Selection, and the Climate. Because we are the “alpha” species, we think we have an advantage over the other two. We prolong our health and control the environment through technology etc. But if I look at the bigger picture, I see that we will lose in the future with the way we are acting. We are playing into our downfall by slowing giving the upper hand to the climate change through the use of fossils fuels, destroying forest etc.
But this loss will be final. All deaths caused by climate change is final. There is no restarting like a normal game. At this point, I laughed with exasperation because it is startling clear what we need to do and adapt, but it going to take so long.
By putting in this image, Squarzoni is writing satire. He criticizing our lack of responsibility and ignorance. He puts it into perspective that this isn’t like a game at all but rather we only have one chance.
