Squarzoni’s Style

This section takes a powerful turn as Squarzoni employs new techniques of conveying data to the reader. I like that he uses famous scientific leaders to state facts on the issue of the climate march. It makes for a very effective information session.

I like the beginning of the section because I think he compares life to a loop. The “departure” is death, or maybe the extinction of the human race. I think that this part of the book is very deep and symbolic, but it can be interpreted in many different ways. I like how Squarzoni uses scenes from different videos as well as personal flashbacks to create an ominous, solemn tone. Another example of this is the series of pictures featuring forest scenes and, specifically, trees. This is directly related to the climate change movement and the preservation of nature. Again, it symbolizes a greater meaning using the lasting impression of plantlife– something that may not be the same for future generations, and representative of the biosphere in general. Motifs such as fleeting moments also represented time and the limited moments in life when we can make differences. Furthermore, the way the pictures are designed make me feel like I’m watching a movie. This was probably intentional, because Squarzoni mentions and is seen watching several movies. It can be a symbol of how he views the process of climate change; as if he were watching a story unravel before him.

The other extremely effective element of evidence to back up claims is the use of different forms of media within the images. Squarzoni utilized devices such as the Climate Change 2007 Synthesis Report, breaking news of Katrina, Time Magazine, and even published computer models. These materialized observations and alerts that we only hear about. Even though the graphic memoir is a secondary source itself, it feels like we can see the primary sources firsthand. This can be attributed to the way Squarzoni designed the book just like a movie.
