“An Era is ending. A New Age will begin.”
This week’s reading of Squarzoni’s Climate Changed produced mixed feelings in me about this particular memoir. As much as I liked few of the phrases from this memoir, I also found some of the facts mentioned completely impertinent.
The phrase from Squarzoni’s Climate Changed “An Era is ending. A New Age will begin” which is also the title of this blog has become one of my favorites from this week’s reading because although this phrase instills a sense of fear in us about the rapidly changing climate of the Earth, it also gives us a conscious motivation to try to change it and make this Earth habitable for our future generations.
As Squarzoni looks at the science behind climate change, he also relates it to the political aspect of this issue which made me lose interest while reading this graphic memoir. He talks about the French Newspaper “Le Monde” and the long process of producing a report about research on climate change through the organization IPCC. He also mentions about the vice president of IPCC and his accomplishments which is irrelevant and distracts the readers from the kernel of the matter in question. In the beginning of part III of this memoir, he talks about the beginnings of the books in general which did not make sense to me. Therefore, all this information seems extraneous to me in a graphic memoir about climate change because I think it shifts the focus of the topic from the main issue of climate change to the insignificant information. He also talks about the previous efforts made by scientists to create awareness about this issue and the government’s repeated ignorance towards this matter which just promotes resentment against the government.
I think Squarzoni’s graphic memoir would have been much simpler and interesting if he would have restricted this memoir to the historical data, science and his personal experience with climate change instead of mentioning about IPCC and the policymakers’ ignorance about this matter.
