Art is Direct…..Art is Mysterious

There is such a thing as “art for arts sake” where pieces of art are created simply because they are aesthetically beautiful or pleasing to look at, such as the mural that is seen of the man candidly kissing the woman. This mural is beautiful to look at and though there may be a deeper meaning to it, it is straightforward in that one does not have to ponder upon it to decipher what it is, it is simply a beautiful image. Art is Direct.

 

There are many works of art that at first glance make one do a double take and scratch their heads wondering what the work IS. This is exactly what I did when I saw this sculpture as I was strolling through the highline. Though I have visited the highline quite a few times, every time I come across this sculpture I have to read the description because simply by looking at it I cannot tell what it is or what it was created for. Art is Mysterious.
