Surviving the Unknown

“In the upper Xingu region of Brazil’s Mato Grosso state, a group of Waura fish in the Piulaga Lake near their village. The upper Xingu Basin is home to an ethnically diverse population.(Brazil, 2005)”

This whole photograph gives off uncertainty. It’s really powerful because there is this fog and the Waura are continuing on, despite the lack of visibility. The sun piercing through is a representation of hope. When I first walked down into the lower level of the museum, this image was the one image that really caught my eye. I am still not sure how it makes me feel, but I feel something. I suppose that adds to the uncertainty quality of the piece. However, upon a second look with Ben and Lauren, we noticed that the people aren’t going into the fog. They’re coming out of it. That blew my mind. I was so caught up in the fog and what it meant, I didn’t pay attention to the direction of the water. What added to this was that the person in the back of the first boat has his back facing the person in the front of the boat. I assumed this was to make sure that no one gets left behind, and also to keep watch so that no one sneaks up on them. It was my favorite image in the gallery.
