When Words Fail…
Salgado’s gallery was truly magnificent. I’m almost at a loss for words to describe the experience as a whole. But when words fail you, there are always pictures. One picture in particular that captured my attention was the photo above. I couldn’t stop looking at it because it somehow reminded me of the concept of a future, comprised with several different meandering rivers one can travel down. It made me feel lost, as though I was stuck between these resilient mountains, headed towards a mysterious end, enshrouded by sunlight. I really didn’t know what to make of it, as it was inspiring and terrifying at the same time. And many of his pictures were like this- stunning and horrifying, beautiful and disgustingly captivating. I was also really intrigued by how the entire museum was composed of pictures bereft of color. It brought out a certain complex simplicity in his photographs. You couldn’t just walk by any of them; you had to stop and notice details you might normally neglect, such as lighting and shadow effects. I have to say that this was one of my favorite art galleries that I’ve been to, and I hope to visit it again soon.
