A Prediction (pgs. 1-91)

The setting of this novel takes place in Europe, which is indicated from the conversation between Major Bolin, Commander Taro, and all the other attendees of the tea ceremony in chapter three. If my prediction is correct, the setting of this novel also occurs in a time after climate change has critically destroyed natural human living conditions. Certain occurrences and statements in the novel have led me to this interpretation. When Noria and Sanja go “scavenger hunting” (which I believe to be their definition for searching through garbage for past-time items), they find a loudspeaker. Along with a VHS that Sanja found previously, they have no idea what these particular items are and classify them as “past-tech machines.” It’s ironic because this novel is attempting to predict how kids will grow up in an environment severely affected by climate change. They will not grow up with the same pleasures and luxuries as present-day kids.

Also, on page 25, Noria and Sanja engage in a conversation that leads me even further to believe my prediction, especially when Sanja says “It’s not them I think about. Only their machines, what they knew and what they left to us.” I believe that she’s referring to the past humans that left them that environmental mess. However, the striking part is when Sanja says “It’s not worth thinking about them, Noria. They didn’t think about us, either.” This brings us back to the fact: if we continue to exacerbate our climate condition, we will not only affect the future of our children, but also future generations to come.

I’m still confused as to why becoming a tea master is so important. Then again, I’m only through one-third of the novel so I’ll find out in due time.
