All of a Sudden
Squarzoni starts this reading with a beautiful picture of mountains and valleys. You can see the clouds, shrubs and rocks. And on the following page, he sits in front of a huge building and claims the day to be a beautiful summer morning. He expresses his gratitude for a comfortable place to sit and enjoy the warming rays of the sun. He also shares his observation of flowers with the reader. I feel like these two pages are a subliminal message to the reader. Squarzoni is trying to stress the fact that in the future it won’t be so easy to find a public place to simply relax.
Starting on page 139, Squarzoni creates a biblical atmosphere. He starts with “in the beginning” just as the Holy Bible does. Therefore, I am recognizing Squarzoni as the author of the climate change “bible.” He states that the world has its own distinct voice. Will we ever listen or pay attention to it? Or will we try to find out what it wants when we cause our share of destruction?
Squarzoni is really starting to scare me though. He continue to asks where to begin and we’re about one-third done with the graphic novel! Will Squarzoni ever find this satisfying beginning? I sure hope so.
On page 152, Squarzoni states “The warming will not be uniform across the planet. The effects on the environment will not be the same everywhere.” This reminds me of all the suffering civilizations and third world countries. The damage will be inflicted upon them. We’ll still be okay for a little while, but they will be in dire need of help.
On page 154, we really get a depiction of the effects of climate change. If a rise of 3.6 to 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit is predicted for South America, Asia, and Australia, then I don’t know what to say. It’s mind boggling. As if it’s not hot enough over there! This could even lead to the same European heat wave of 2003. Do we really want to repeat history?
