Depleting beauty

This photograph is of a population of birds on an island

I chose this photograph because I think we often overlook the species that get lost because of climate change.  We are sometimes so quick to acknowledge what it can do to us, that we may lose sight to what its doing to the animals.  This photograph is a beautiful depiction of penguins in their natural habitat; the only thing they care about is surviving and taking care of one another.  These penguins have made this island their home and they’ve build stability here.  But climate change can take all of that away in a matter of days.

When I see this photograph, I think of the helplessness of these penguins and how they didn’t choose to live in a dying world.  They can’t help Mother Earth in the way we can.

This photograph is bitter sweet.  Its a beautiful depiction of penguins yet its also a depiction of what can be lost if we don’t take action.  There’s more at stake than our discomfort with the temperature.
