art is intended, art is surprised

railroad tracks at the highline diverge: on the left, straight lines through pavement; on the right, branches overgrown with wild plants

Toward the north end of the Highline, where the newest section bends west toward the river, the track divides. To the left and south, the pavement continues and the tracks cut straight ahead: art is intended. Willed. Controlled by the artist. But across the wall the tracks divide, and they have allowed the windblown seed to take root: art is surprising, leaving the artist capable only of noticing and celebrating where the original idea has gone.

I was very happy with how this photograph came out: the wall divides a single shot into two, my paired images equally integral to the single paradoxical claim.
