New York, baby!
I agree with Squarzoni that life requires us to be cautious and risky, which I believe both to be metaphysical characteristics. We use caution so that we don’t possibly lose something. We are risk-takers so that we can possibly gain something. Life has different paths to choose from and these choices makes us what we are. Squarzoni mentions that this path we follow is lined with “doors and bridges” and we know it would be “pretty reckless to cross” the bridges. I can relate since I’ve actually walked across the Williamsburg Bridge and I can say that it felt as if I’d never reach the other side.
I enjoyed the illustrations of NYC on pages 224-235. They consisted of beautiful scenes, even though the color is black and white. However, the details are what actually make you pay attention. You can identify the Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, and the other Manhattan skyscrapers. Squarzoni invites the reader to his previous night out with Camille in the city. I feel as if I can also see the beautiful sunset on the horizon, hear the patter of feet as people job by, and watch as ripples are created in the water every time a boat passes by. I feel at peace.
