The Downward Spiral of Hell
Even though we were told this course will end with hope, this section proved that to be difficult.
This section was essentially about how even if we make the move to change our ways, we’ll still be in a downward spiral of hell that will put us in a vortex of positive feedback. We’ve dug ourselves in such a deep hole that the consequences are unavoidable. Now, its just a matter of how long we’ll have to endure them until equilibrium can be restored back to the world.
Even if we make the agreement to lower fossil fuel use, the change is not immediate; and the change is not large enough to avoid the repercussions of climate change.
I think the example with the plate was really useful and smart. We’re blindly pushing a plate, slowly and surely, until one day it won’t be able to sustain itself and the threshold will break and everything will fall. Except climate change is much worse because we’re not pushing it so blindly. We’re pushing the limits of the world, knowing that the consequences are dire. We keeping pushing it more and more hoping to find more wealth and more profit in the nooks and crannies of Mother Earth. Until one day, one day soon…she’ll reach her limit…she won’t be able to sustain herself…and she’ll fall.
Sometimes it should be obvious… If you’re digging a whole and you become stuck… instinct should tell you to just stop digging. I guess we missed that memo.
