Circle of Doom

Squarzoni had broken the the main causes of emission of CO2 pretty well in pie charts throughout the whole section. Electric generation is 32.4%, Industry is 16.8%, Transportation is 14%, Residential and Commercial is 10.3%, Agriculture is 12.5%, Deforestation is 10%, and the extra 4% from where ever. Those were the only things that I paid attention to when he when into details. There were quite a variety of pictures in this sections as compared- mostly of consumer goods, logos, sayings (Like the Air France One), and posters which I enjoyed because I end up searching up where this images came from. They were detailed and parts such as the transportation section gives me the impression of the rush and the need of invention; how everything is constantly moving and accelerating, but we just can’t seem to stop.

There was one horrifying image that he put in. It started with the cogwheels of cars, coke bottles, and paper bills in p.187. Then again on p.202 where it was drawn with technology. Finally on p.218, there was an image of starved almost dead looking people around the wheel. That image freaked me out completely; but it represents how bad of the situation – where the number of people who will be deprived of basic needs will only increased as time goes. (I realized that in several places, he put in the reference of the tipping plate as well.) In addition, he also had portrayed the lack of time with the movie way of counting down, and I can just hear the static and the clicks as the number goes down.

These circles analogies that Squarzoni put within the graphic memoir represents that everything comes full circle. Eventually, when we hit the end, we will be back to where we started – with barely anything and the only thing important is the need to survival, rather than material goods and wealth. And then everything will started again.
