Nostalgia
To be perfectly honest, I was really excited about going to this performance. I took dance for the 4 years of high school and it was there that I truly fell in love. Dance is one of those things that can be so freeing. Because of dance I gained self confidence and I gained a sense of empowerment. This performance, really took me back.
With the ballet duets, I admired the amazing pointe and the grace of these dancers. I also admired the mix of ballet with more contemporary styles of dance. It gave a good twist to it.
With the hip hop/modern duet, I admired their precision. One moment in particular stands out to me. When he jumped over her while she stood up and knocked her down, I seriously thought that he broke her neck or something. But in that split second, before I could even finish a though, he was already behind her and pushing her back up before she even touched the ground. It was truly astonishing.
Alvin Ailey was a great way to end the show. The dancing in the beginning reminded me of elevator music. I imagined a man who was supposed to be working, but got caught up in the music and couldn’t help himself. It felt so fluid and so spontaneous. I especially loved when they brought people up on stage. It was so chaotic yet so structured and planned. It was so energetic yet still so personal.
I truly had an amazing time.
