Change? About that…..

I think the dialogue and conversation on page 209 between Squarzoni and his wife pretty much sums up the general thoughts we as human beings have regarding a resolution to climate change. Even though the majority of the world has heard of ‘Global Warming’ and ‘Climate Change’, they do not know serious these concepts are. Squarzoni has to ultimately make a difficult decision on whether he should take a plane to the Laos or not. On one hand, he wants to travel around the world and explore places with his wife (who wouldn’t), but there’s a sense of guilt and hypocrisy that arises within him as he researching about climate change. As he states on page 199, planes are “the mode of transportation that generates the highest level of emissions” and it keeps increasing as time progresses. This is what ultimately makes him not want to take a plane to the Laos. The difficulty of his decision is very clear. I think Squarzoni speaks for most of us when he says, “I don’t see why I should deprive myself” (pg. 209), especially since the plane is taking off whether he is on board or not.

By examining the image on page 217, I ask myself the same question, “Why should I deprive myself of these things?”. The sumptuous burger that comforts my stomach. The LED TV that allows me to view The Walking Dead every Sunday. The fridge that allows me to bring a nice cool water bottle to class every morning or the heater that melts away the shivering and chattering of my teeth come the holiday season. What about the IPhone that allows me to communicate with all of you or the computer that is allowing me to express my very thoughts you are reading as of this moment. What do we cut first? I don’t even know, nor do I want to know. There must be another way than altering our live to reflect those of malnourished individuals of underdeveloped countries.
