Currently suffering from a chronic case of split personality
This section of Climate Changed made me take many reality checks and realize that we are all in many ways presented with Squarzoni’s split personality dilemma. Many of us, I think, are probably in the same predicament that Squarzoni is in, we live in a world full of contradictions. Before we began the whole discussion on climate change many of us were oblivious to the topic of climate change and how real and serious it actually is, but like Squarzoni we have open our eyes and ears and no longer think the same way we did yesterday. We now know about climate change and we know many ways in which we can begin to cut on our carbon emissions, BUT we don’t do it. The images in this section depict Squarzoni boarding a plane and he says “we’re caught in so many contradictions….we know but we don’t make changes, our initial ignorance has been replaced by some sort of split personality.”
A part of us ardently wants to change and make a difference while the other part, the dominant part, simply refuses to act and does nothing. We continue to live our lives as we did before when we were truly ignorant. Just as Squarzoni states the “problem is that we cant see the change happening, the climatic crisis is still far off too abstract to shift our priorities.” We cant just stop riding the bus, driving our cars or buying our cheese burgers, we have to get to where we need to be and we have to eat right? Its not until some catastrophe hits that we will see the error of our ways, or better yet until out kids and grandkids see the error of our ways.
