Shall we take the Primitive route now?
This section of the reading reminded me of a discussion we had today in Anthropology. The debate of whether it is more convenient to live in a primitive society rather than our modern society was being questioned. The majority of the class believed that our modern society is more convenient due to our technological advancements and industrial progressions. However, one classmate mentioned how in a primitive society, with a lack of ‘technology’ and an embracement for hunting and gathering, there is an absence of desire for material goods. With this deficiency of want and desire, there is really no stress for one to make enough money in order to get the new Iphone. Relating this to Squarzoni, the majority of us believe that “our desires have no consequences,” (Squarzoni 264). Just like in a primitive society, there is a high importance on what they need, not what they want. In our society, however, it seems to be the exact opposite. We want to check our Facebook newsfeed. We want to go to Europe. We want to eat that new hamburger on the dollar menu. We want to watch that popular TV show. But the question is do we need to??
