Different
If only the weather and the MTA graced us with better conditions, Saturday night would have been a great package. But I’m not going to let that ruin my experience! I am not familiar with jazz but I am delighted to be exposed to it. Listening to the Cyrus Chestnut Trio was a great way to end the night.
The lights on the stage changed from red to blue to a orange- scarlet, often representing the general moods of the songs. I often found myself tapping to the beat of the songs. The two songs they played after Chestnut talked about his trip to Africa and about the slaves were my favorite. The first song seemed to be joyful with the high notes of the piano. It could resemble the beginning of the trip, the hopeful thoughts Chestnut had while he entered the country (I forgot which one, sorry). However the second composition was filled with thunderous sounds with the Lewis and the drums being the star. I loved the roaring and crashing sounds of the drums and the fast paced, sorrow filled notes of the bass and piano. Perhaps the song was about Chestnut discovering the conditions of the slaves and of the feelings of the slaves themselves.
Overall, the music we listened to at Miller theater was much different than what I listen to. Change can be a bit iffy but in this case, I’m glad to find out change was great. Jazz is something I’d like to look into more, thanks to this performance.
