If Only
In this section Squarzoni is contemplating how to end the graphic novel. Some endings stay with us, some are sudden, and others are just beautiful. What will our end be like? You know when the end of the world comes. It’s going to happen. 80% of the world economy is based on coal, oil, and natural gas. These three sources of energy emit greenhouse gases. We know we have one big problem to face; that problem being climate change, but there is another problem. Fossil fuels are running out. We are using up fossil fuels faster than nature can replenish them. Today, for every barrel of oil discovered, four barrels are being consumed. That’s insane. By the year 2030, we will be experiencing oil shortages. Then what will we do? We will have reached an economic and ecological stalemate. We are falling from the sky and we don’t have a parachute to save us. The parachutist Squarzoni described was either so used to jumping or he was so focused on taking his video that he forgot his parachute and fell to his death. We are like the parachutist; we think we know what we are doing, but before we know it BOOM; we have fallen to our death. While the parachutist was in the air he must have said to himself “If only I could go back in time.” If only he could go back in time to change his actions so he would be saved now. If only we could go back and change our actions to save us. We can’t go back and we can’t change anything like the parachutist, but we can try now before we all fall to our deaths and think to ourselves “If only we did this” or “If only we did that.”
