Seeing Jazz for the First Time
I really enjoyed watching the Chestnut Trio perform. It was the first Jazz performance I had ever attended and it certainly will not be my last. Listening to the all the songs they performed substantiated some of the qualities of Jazz I had learned about in preparing the history of jazz presentation with Won. The swing, the rhythms, and the ability for Jazz to be both celebratory and solemn were all present in their performance. I loved how Chestnut continually gave credit to the percussionist and the double bass player throughout the performance and voluntarily humbled himself even though he was the most well known of the three performers. He seemed very sincere and concerned about what he was playing. I thought it was particularly powerful when he was talking about the slave house he went to and mentioned that “the walls spoke to him” and it made me appreciate the emotion of the song the trio played even more. I think Jazz fits in so well into nighttime culture and the culture of New York City. Overall the performance made the Saturday evening all the more relaxing and enjoyable.
