POEM:
I am from a strong-willed father, a tenderhearted mother, and two
Inspirational older sisters.
From dirt roads, hot weather, mosquito bites, and curry
That I never really liked.
From an Indian background that escaped me,
But will never truly leave my heart.
From the laughter, tears, and smiles that made me be me from the very start.
I am from long road trips to Virginia and North Carolina,
From my dad yelling at the other drivers on the road,
From my mom yelling at my dad to “Slow down” and me trying to sleep in the car.
I am from the chocolate cupcake mom brought home on Fridays
Until the bakery closed down.
From the Coca-Cola I am addicted to and the Chinese food at the mall food court
I can’t get enough of.
I am from the Catholic schoolgirl uniform I wore for 12 years.
From going to church every Sunday and having faith that everything will be okay.
I am from the trips to Toys R’ Us,
From the golden retriever I begged my parents to get,
But never could.
I’m from the “SHHH you are being too loud!”
The “Slow down you are talking too fast!”
The “Come on, its time for bed!”
I am from the late night talks with friends
Or the late nights spent doing homework that
Should have been done two days ago.
I am from spending all my money at Forever 21 and Express
From texting 24/7,
From the IPhone that is my life.
I am from the Blanky I still sleep with,
From the birthday parties I shared with friends.
From dreading going to the doctor because
They can never find my veins.
I am from the #6 Spicy chicken sandwich from Wendy’s
With sweet and sour sauce.
From the Triple Chocolate Meltdown from Applebee’s.
I am from the Coffee Coolata at Dunkin Donuts even though I hate coffee
From the Passion Tea Lemonade at Starbucks.
I am from the sister I never knew, but the niece I now have
I am from the sight of needles and blood on the floor,
From the 911 call I saw on the phone,
From the destruction and reconstruction of my dad’s heart.
I am from the tragedies that shattered me,
From the happiness that restored me.
This project was by far my favorite project ever even though I was completely stressed out the week it was due. I had to go back home to get pictures on a Monday and then come back to my dorm later that night. It was so tiring and then timing everything to perfection was so difficult. It was also hard to figure out which songs to use because I love so many songs! There were so many pictures I wanted to use, so it was hard picking and choosing the best ones. I have never used nor heard of IMovie before, so I was terrified of using the program, but I eventually got the hang of it and will use it when I have other projects. The night before the movie was due I was putting everything together and cleaning it up; I was really trying to perfect it. I was using IMovie for hours straight without a break, so the program was starting to freeze and close on me. This, of course, freaked me out. I had so many questions (that I of course had to think of them at the very last minute) so Ben received many emails from me! When it was finally done and I absolutely loved it (that was at 7 in the morning by the way) I uploaded it to Youtube, but was freaking out because it was taking too long to upload, so I decided to email Ben again asking why this is happening to me and how I’m freaking out and blah blah. I was a mess basically. I then watched my movie as it was on Youtube and I was so proud of it. I was so proud of everyone’s projects. I know how hard we all worked on it; we all spent hours on it; first writing the poem, then putting pictures together, finding music, recording our voices, timing everything, etc. I sent the video to my parents and sisters with a little email saying how much I love them and how they have shaped me into the person I am today. They were shocked to receive such a random heartwarming email from me, since I live in the dorm, I rarely find time to speak to my family on the phone. They didn’t even know I was making a video about my life. My mom and sisters cried when they saw it. They all expressed to me how much they loved the video and how much they loved me. I know my parents miss me since I don’t live at home anymore, so they told me that every night before they go to bed, they go onto Youtube and watch my video. That means the world to me. I am so proud of it, but the fact that my family (the people I dedicated this video to) is proud of it and proud of me makes me feel so happy.
