Where I’m From

 

I am from white rice, the oval shaped sticky grain

That reminds me of the love among my friends

And how we stick together.

I am from spicy food, red hormones promoted by capsaicin,

Traveling through my veins to liberate me from pain and stress.

I am from Korean food,

From “Kimchi” and “Bulgogi,” my favorites.

I am from all kinds of tea,

Green tea, jasmine, and peppermint

That relaxes me when I am stressed,

A refuge from homework and exams.

 

 

I am from my family, friends, and boyfriend,

Who make me so happy that I smile all the time.

From going to the park, eating,

Taking sticker pictures,

And attending wedding ceremonies together.

I am from my lovely dog, ‘Daebak’,

Who suffers from kidney disease

Since he was 3 years old.

From taking him to the hospital once a week to get a shot

From taking him out for exercise,

Walking for 2 hours every day

In hopes of curing his disease.

 

 

I am from all hurried and quick actions,

From robot-like-city with vacant stares to friendly strangers

From being shocked at first

When strangers smiled at each other on the street

And held the door open for the next person.

I am from saving seats for the elderly on the bus and subway,

From showing respect to the elderly in every situation.

I am from a country that has huge economic development

From Samsung and LG,

Competing with others on the hierarchy of electronic products.

I am from K-Pop;

And Psy’s “Gangnam Style,”

Gaining huge popularity

Throughout the world.

 

 

I am from Korea

Where it is smaller than the State of New York but has beautiful nature and old tradition.

I am from passion and hard work.

I am from newly America

From new freedom and opportunity.

I am from my St. Mary’s high school in Long Island.

And now I am at Lehman College with new people whom I love.
