Limits vs. Freedom
One the last page of the section , there was a quote by Cornelius Castoriadis which said “A truly free society should know how to limit itself, know that there are things we cannot do and… shouldn’t even want.” The quote is contradictory to us because we are used to the idea that nothing is impossible – how do we be free, when things are being restricted?
He was a philosopher that called for societies to legitimizes its laws and why they are just. A capitalist society is defined by logic, and by logic, it meant the maximization of utilization and minimization of costs. However, from what we seen, the costs isn’t really minimized, but rather ignored. All the natural consequences are building up, and we still chose to ignore them. I just found it ironic that we considered ourself freer than other nations, but we really don’t even know where to start regarding limits.
