An Eccentrically Powerful Performance

Birds with Sky mirrors is the performance I would never forget in my life because it was a creepy, eccentric but a very powerful performance. To be honest, I was clueless what was going on during those 90 minutes and although I did try to make sense out of it, I couldn’t do it until I read Ponifasio’s explanation of this performance. I was very curious to find out the purpose of its title “Birds with Sky mirrors” because I could not link it to the performance while I was watching it but an interesting fact that I discovered later was that the title refers to Ponifasio’s discovery of birds grasping ribbons of videotape in their beaks, “like liquid mirrors in the sky,” which I thought was cool.
Another highlight of this performance was the dancing naked woman and her appearance in the beginning of the performance made it even weirder for me because first I thought we might be watching the wrong performance thinking what does a naked woman have anything to do with climate change! But later I found out it was a Samoan dance and that is the format of such a dance.
The part which I didn’t like in this performance was where the dancers sprinkled some powder on the stage because I felt like it was tediously long without any purpose and it kind of took away the interest from the performance.
One thing that I really liked about this performance was that the performers were magnificent, utterly focussed and committed and the stage set up was very beautifully created by Ponifasio.
Overall it was a unique experience to watch this performance.
