Exposure
BAM: Birds with Skymirrors was a very interesting experience. After walking away from the performance I felt thoroughly confused. I had never seen anything such as the likes of Birds with Skymirrors – naked women squawking and bare chested men slapping themselves. Still, I felt as I witnessed something profound. The choreography was hypnotizing and it truly captured Lemi Ponifasio’s message. The dancers embodied deformed birds as they consumed garbage. When the dancer attempted to fly away but was held down by the garbage within his stomach, this was mirrored by a clip of an actual bird doing the same. This was heart wrenching. I am glad I was able to see Simoan Dance. I don’t know if I would have ever seen it otherwise; but because of the Macaulay Seminar “Arts in New York City” I was exposed to such an interesting, captivating art form. I am very grateful for this.
