Finding the “right” opera
There was a part in article where Patchett said that if there is an opera available, always give it a chance. I think this is the most important part in enjoying art forms or anything that one is unfamiliar with. It is with the open mind that leads to us finding new things that we like; If we don’t give it chance, how would we know if we like it or not. She makes a very fair point between listening to the music alone and using the music in an opera. She writes that she checks out the performance troops and what specific shows are playing because there is nothing better than a well-executed opera. Opera makes a literal representation of the music, but it is the performers that make or break it. All in all, Patchett warns us to not to judge opera simply based on one performance, but also learn the story behind the scenes. (And also to keep trying until you find an opera that truly fits you)
