Opera is more than just music

When I was in fifth grade, I attended the Phantom of the Opera Broadway show. Although my glasses broke that day, and I couldn’t see much, I actually enjoyed the music and I remember going home and listening to the songs and playing them on the piano. This article, however, has made me even more excited to attend the Hansel and Gretal Opera. I agree that opera, as well as any other musical song, takes you into another world. Recently, I realized when you place your own personal meaning to a song, you can not hear it the same way you originally did. In opera, on the other hand, its more than just the musical notes and language used. It’s the story, the acting, as well as the production that comes into play. The reasons why I listen to the songs I do now, is either because it’s catchy, has a good beat to it, or is relatable; factors I would never associate with opera. I never thought I could relate to opera, but that is only because I never tried to. When I hear opera, I think of extreme ballads which reach levels that prevent me from comprehending the words being spoken. Like songs, I have to actually immerse myself into the emotions being projected by the singer.
