Waiting For Pinkerton’s Ship

I think this was a very good introductory piece to capture the attention of ignorant ears and expose them to the mysterious beauty that is opera. Personally, I connected quite well to the opinions of this author. As of now, I know absolutely nothing about opera, aside from the few allusions to the well known “Carmen” in some television shows or literature that I have seen and read. However, after reading this article, I realized what a complex phenomenon it is to experience opera. There are so many different factors that play in to the complete understanding and processing of it, the most essential of which, is emotion.

My favorite thing about all music is its ability to tell a story. And if there’s one thing that I was able to get from this reading, it’s that opera is not only able to do just that, but also has the ability to pull at your heartstrings and make you feel the story. The reading was also able to impress the point that you may not like everything the first time around, but with an increased understanding and knowledge of it, comes an increased appreciation, if not a newfound enjoyment. I am definitely looking forward to the opera that we’ll be attending, and can’t wait to see what it has in store for us.
